How does orange light reduce bug presence?

Some bugs, like mosquitos and moths, can't help but move their body towards any light source they can see. This phenomenon is called positive phototaxis. Entomologists still don't have a complete understanding of why this phenomenon exists, but it is clearly observable in nature.

Of course, bugs will only be attracted to light they can see, and there is a useful difference between the spectra of light which are visible to humans compared to bugs. Humans can generally see light which has a wavelength between 380nm (blue) and 740nm (red). Most bugs, conversely, can see light with a wavelength between 300nm and 600nm.

The wavelength of our orange LEDs is 610nm, putting them outside of the spectrum visible to must bugs, but still well inside the boundaries of human vision. As a result, most bugs will not congregate around our orange light because they simply don't know it is there.

The first ever work lights with bug-reducing orange/white technology.

Hardkorr's new XDW Series work lights are characterised by clean, bezel-free lines and a sleek appearance. Their most distinctive feature, however, is the reflectors. Utilising the latest engineering methods and manufacturing techniques, these reflectors are precisely calibrated and manufactured to nanometre precision to create incredible beam patterns that simply weren't possible in the past. We call this our Hyperflood™ technology.

Showcasing this new reflector technology combined with latest-generation CREE® LED chips, these XDW Series tri-colour work lights produce a strong, ultra-wide 120 degree beam. They are the first work light to incorporate our famous orange/white colour change feature, and can be switched between three colours (cool white, warm white and orange) using the included push-button dimmer. The cool white light provides maximum brightness, whereas the new warm white setting gives off a light that is almost as bright as cool white, but with a pleasant soothing warmth. It’s perfect for setting a calm, happy mood in your campsite, particularly later at night. Finally, switching to the orange light naturally reduces the presence of bugs by up to 90%, and is particularly useful around food preparation and eating areas.

You can mount these units on places like roof racks, canopies or caravans to provide auxiliary lighting for reversing, off-road visibility, camping or working around the vehicle. The 45 degree angled beam means that you can mount them up high without any of the light output being wasted, and with an IP69K ingress protection rating, these things will handle all the dust and water you can throw at them - you can even submerge them up to 3m in water.

Key features

  • Tri-colour technology: allows you to select between cool white, warm white and orange light at the touch of a button.
  • Unrivalled durability: constructed from ADC12 cast aluminium housing and UV-coated Lexan® polycarbonate lens.
  • IP69K waterproof and dustproof: will handle the roughest driving conditions with ease.
  • Genuine CREE® LED chips: ensures outstanding colour registration (CRI), consistency and long lifespan.
  • 45° light angle: significantly reduces wasted light when mounted up high.
  • 120° beam spread: makes the light much more useful for reversing, camping, working and up-close visibility.
  • Includes dimmer and 3m cable: everything you need to mount the light, connect it to your setup and control its features.

Genuine parts, precision optics.

Hardkorr’s work lights are made using genuine top-grade OSRAM® LED chips sourced from authorised agents, to ensure even light throw, correct colour rendering and long service life. These chips are matched with custom engineered reflectors that are manufactured to nanometre precision, and secured within high-quality aluminium housing which is designed to effectively dissipate heat and protect the sensitive components within.

This attention to detail ensures that every unit we manufacture gives consistent performance, and helps us fulfil our ambition to be the world’s most trusted manufacturer of LED lighting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Lumens simply measures the total quantity of light emitted at the source. It does not take into account the ability of the light to direct that light into a usable pattern, which is a critical function of a driving light. Lux, on the other hand, measures the total distance travelled by that light beam, which is a function of the precision with which the reflectors have been designed and engineered. It is a much better measure of the quality of a light.

Driving lights will generally give you a greater forward distance, whereas light bars will give more spread to the sides of the road. As technology improves we are starting to see more crossover between the two i.e. driving lights with improving flood capability and light bars with increasing forward distance, but the difference in shape will mean that each type of light will always have an inherent advantage over the other in one area.

It is worth remembering that LED chips contain many microscopic parts, and the manufacturing process is very complex.

Firstly and most importantly, higher-quality chips will last much longer on average compared to those of lesser quality. Given the difficulty in replacing an LED chip compared to say an HID bulb, longevity is of paramount importance. There is nothing worse than having an LED spotlight on the front of your vehicle with a few dead chips!

Secondly, high-quality LED chips will be much more consistent in colour temperature, which means the appearance of the LED driving light will be much more uniform. LED spot lights using high-quality LEDs will have a better Colour Rendering Index (CRI), which is a measure of the accuracy with which the light reveals colours to the human eye.

The dimmer switches have a 5A load rating. These work lights draw around 1.2A so you'd be able to run up to 4 lights per switch.

All Hardkorr products are manufactured using the highest quality materials. We are confident that they are the most durable in the market and will give you many years of reliable service. We stand behind this product with a comprehensive 3-year Australian warranty and a 30-day money back guarantee.

45° XDW TRI-COLOUR

After searching for a rear light for use on my touring setup that could be used for both reverse lighting but also camp lighting i stumbled across the 45° XDW TRI-COLOUR work light.
This light was able to satisfy both these needs and some, coupled with a wireless controller made this setup incredibly versatile and usefull with a wild amount of light output both in distance and spread. Will be buying more for my up and comming build on my 110 defender for use in the same purpose. For more content on my search my Insta
